Dr. T. Ao Trophy kicks off in new astro turf
TUENSANG DISTRICT STUN DIMAPUR; MOKOKCHUNG, KOHIMA WIN
Defending champions Mokochung district came from behind to snatch a 5-2 victory against Longleng in the opening match of Dr. T. Ao Trophy (20th Inter District Football Tournament) which kicked off Tuesday in the newly inaugurated astro turf ground at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.
The tournament is being organised by Department of Youth Resources & Sports in collaboration with Nagaland Football Association.
Longleng struck twice in the first 10th minute of the match with Chingshen P. Buchem scoring in the 7th minute and Shepa B scoring in the 10th minute to take 2-0 lead over the defending champions. However, Suponglemba restored some parity when he found the net in the 19th minute. And in the 25th minute, Toshiwapang equalised the score.
In the second half, Suponglemba found the back of the net again in the 42nd and Toshi added his brace in the 61st minute. Supong struck again in the 66 minute to complete his hat-trick and also sealed the game in favour of the defending champions.
Mokokchung will now play against Zunheboto in their pre-quarterfinal match on January 31.
In the second match, K. Longkhoi Khiamniugan scored a hat-trick as Tuensang stunned Dimapur team 3-0. Lacked of fitness and team combination from Dimapur players hampered their play as Tuensang dethroned them with pace and counter attacks. Longkhoi goals came in the 61st, 69th and 78th minute of the match.
In the last match of the day, Kohima earned a hard fought 2-1 victory against Mon. Yhunshalo Kemp, the captain scored one and missed a penalty in the first half, while Menguelie Rutsa doubled the lead in the 42nd minute for Kohima.
Kohima’s striker Yhanshalo and Gideon Leo were culpable of missing numerous chances in the second half to finish the game. Medophrezo Kezieo, Kohima’s goalkeeper made some spectacular saves during the match to keep the team in the lead but a defensive error helped Mon to score in the last quarter of the match.
M. Angki Konyak helped the team to score a goal with seven minutes remaining in the game but it was too late as Kohima team held on their nerve till the end of the final whistle to go through the pre-quarters.
With that win, Kohima will play against Tuensang in the pre-quarterfinal match on January 31.
